Laxitives are used to promote bowel movements, but they come in many different forms and accomplish this task in different ways. With all laxitives, you should drink plenty of water everyday. Some forms of laxitives are ...
Bulk forming laxitives and hyperosmotics pass through your intestines collecting liquid to form bulky stools. This stimulates the intestines to pass it through.
Lubricants coat the stool and intestines to keep moisture in the stool and to make passage through the intestines easier.
Stimulants don't do anything to the stool, but stimulate the intestines to contract and move the stool through.
Stool softeners do what they say - they soften the stool to make it easier to pass through the intestines. This is helpful if bowel movements are difficult because they're too hard.
