Valtrex can be taken either daily as a preventative measure to prevent herpes outbreaks from occurring, or it can be taken at a higher dosage only when an outbreak occurs. At high doses, veltrex will usually get rid of an outbreak within 2 or 3 days, unless there are mitigating circumstances, like excess stress. With a preventative dose, many people can go months or even a year or more with no outbreaks. The only thing to consider in this case is that the drug may be taking a toll on your liver if you use it everyday. There haven't been enough longitudinal studies yet to determine if there are any long term effects of using valtrex.
