Allopurinal is most often used to treat gout or kidney stones. It won't get rid of these things, but it can help prevent them by reducing the uric acid in the body.
If you suffer from gout attacks, then after you start taking allopurinal, you may actually experience more, but in time they will decrease. In order to get the benefits of alopurinol, you have to take it regularly, not just when you feel unwell.
Alopurinal is sold under the brand names Zyloprim and Alloprim.
